Let the Pruning Begin
The snow covers the distant mountains, and as the New Zealand Ski Season swings into full action so do our hard working hands and helpful secateurs. Pruning has begun here at Crighton Estate as we carefully select the new canes that will bring our 2012 season to life. It might be bitterly cold, but that hasn’t stopped our enthusiasm for growing great wine. After a very successful 2011 at the vineyard, the Crighton Clan gears up to start the season all over again. We are looking forward to releasing the much anticipated 2011 range as we work with our loyal clientele, here and overseas, to continue to bring you the wine you love.

The vineyard is ripe with baby grapes happily growing in this blissful Marlborough sun. What a week! We have had torrential rain, 50km plus gale force winds, humid conditions combined with classic Marlborough hot and sunny days. Thankfully the babies are still growing great! It’s amazing what Mother Nature can throw at you from season to season. Luckily we have a wonderful team working on Crighton Estate, including our very own tractor/spray contractors BNC Viticulture Contracting Ltd, that ensure our grapes are well taken care of while still remaining 100% sustainable. We are also proud to announce the bottling of our 2010 Barking Hedge Riesling that is simply divine! Looking forward to your feedback. Hope you all had a GREAT Christmas! All of us at Crighton Estate wish you all the very best for the New Year!

The 20 10 Barking Hedge vintage has officially been harvested! All of the years hard work and dedication has been lovingly picked from the vines and is now in the process of becoming a fine wine. Mother Nature has been kind this year and once again Crighton Estate has produced an impressive crop of high quality grapes. As all the vineyards across Marlborough wind-down for some time off (PHEW), the wineries are in full swing, producing the areas fantastically famous wines. Here's to another great season of growing wine. From pruning to frost fighting, bud-rubbing and fruit thinning, lifting wires, trimming vines, foliage sprays, leaf-plucking, bird scaring, nets and EVERYTHING in-between harvest is the cream of the crop...the final frontier for 2010. Here's to 2011! CHEERS

The se ason is in full swing at Crighton Estate, and we are loving the sweet summer sun! Flowering has begun and the entire 2011 crop is looking great. We began wire lifting this week (when you lift the canopy and tuck under-wires) and over the next few weeks the vines will be leaf plucked and trimmed. Looking forward to the release of our first batch of Riesling (2010) in the coming weeks. We are also preparing our website so that we can sell direct to the public, meaning you, our loyal consumer, can make huge savings on our great wine! We are also proud to announce that Barking Hedge Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir is now selling in the USA, another fantastic feat for this home-grown family vineyard. Stay tuned for more of what's happening at Crighton Estate.

The nets are on, t he bird scare guns are firing, and we start the countdown to harvest . It's all about protecting your crop at this time of year. Birds can not only eat an entire crop of tasty grapes, they also leave behind some nasty bugs that can do irreversible damage.
Now we wait and let mother nature do her best . Currently the brix levels (sugar levels) for the sauvignon blanc grapes are around 20, we need some sunshine to push this up to 24. Then the harvesters will come in and the focus turns from growing to producing. Another vintage season nearly done...CHEERS
